Why Go:
- For many people the only reason they come to Devonport is to get on and off the ferry to and from Melbourne.
Highlights:
- Mersey Bluff: at the inlet to the harbour you can drive up to the LIghthouse for some great views across Bass Strait. Also here is the Tiagarra Aboriginal Culture and Art Centre. Nearby in the evening you may also see some penguins coming up the beach.
- Waterfront: you can enjoy a walk along the waterfront surrounded by picturesque parklands.
- Maritime Museum: featuring ship models, relics and photographs, giving an insight into the islands's rich maritime history.
- Tiagarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre: including Aboriginal rock carvings which are thought to date back 10,000 years
Eating & Drinking:
- As you get off the ferry there are quite a few places set up to cater for the early morning crowd wanting a hearty breakfast.
- It is quite a large town, with several supermarkets and shopping and eating areas, so you will have no trouble finding somewhere to eat in your budget range.
Other things you should know about:
- If traveling from Tasmania to Melbourne, you should consider taking the ferry.
- The town is still mostly a port city and arrival point for many coming across from melbourne on the ferry. There is not a lot for the tourist, and if you have little time it is best to head straight away to the more appealing other places around Tasmania
