We last took the ferry to and from Melbourne in October 2006
Why Go:
- For those not in a hurry, or those wanting to take their car to Tasmania, the ferry is a very worthwhile option and enjoyable experience.
Highlights:
- Watching the city lights of Melbourne or Devonport as you depart in the evening.
- Drifting off to sleep in a cabin to the gentle rocking of the ferry.
Lowlights:
- Bass Strait, which the ferry crosses, is notoriously a very rough section of water. Therefore you may need to take precautions if you are prone to sea sickness.
- As the ferry travels overnight, you have limited time to enjoy the facilities provided on board.
Eating & Drinking:
- There are a few bars to chose from for an alcoholic drink
- There is an ala carte and buffet restaurant, and small snacks available from the bars.
Other things you should know about:
- Accommodation: sleeping cabins, or sleeper chairs
- Entertainment: TVs, movies, gaming room, kids play room
- Shopping: shop selling mostly tourist souvenirs.
- If you need a car in Tasmania, taking one across with you may work out more economical that hiring one when you arrive.
