This nation is comprised over 7000 islands and is situated north of Indonesia and south-east of mainland Asia. About 1000 islands are inhabited and most are mountainous. The country has a population of over 80 million (2002 figures) and is growing rapidly.

• Language: Pilipino (based on Tagalog) and English is widely used.

• Religion: most are Roman Catholic Christians. A small number of Muslims inhabit the island of Mindanao
