Explorers were the first great travelers. Here are just a few of them:

• Christopher Columbus — his voyages to America from Europe had a huge impact on the world.

• Ferdinand Magellan — A Portuguese sailor who sent sail from Spain to find a route west to the spice islands.

• Marco Polo — he traveled overland through Asia for most his life with his father Nicolo and uncle Maffeo.

• James Cook — a great navigator, Cook went on several journeys in the 1700s, including being the first european to chart the east coast of Australia.
