The Food of Poland
[back to Food Diary Index]
These notes were made during a short trip to Krakow in Poland. These are just our food experiences and you may have a totally different experience depending on your budget, where you travel and where you eat. These notes are from when we travelled here in September 2005.
Bread circle
A favourite snack of the locals, found in little street side carts; a cirlce of bread covered in sesame seeds or poppy seeds.
Smoked cheese
Locals selling this interesting food which looks like bread, set themselves up all over town. The cheese is smoked and comes in pretty patterned shapes. Very strong tasting, but goes well with the bread circle if you’re in a hurry. Really cheap as well!
Soups
Soups are very popular around these parts. Beetroot soup features on many menus, however I never tried any, unfortunately.
Bread subs
Like what mum used to make after school... A half a baguette (or long roll) sliced length ways and topped with cheese (plus other ingredients) and grilled, usually served with tomato sauce.
Favourite restuarant
We found a great place to eat which we went back to several times. The food is on display (so you can see what you are getting), you can choose any number of different dishes, and is reasonably priced. Some of the food we ate here includes:
- carrot and ground pork lasagne - surprisingly yummy
- pancake rolled with spinach filling and fried
- curry vegetables, curry chicken with rice
- fried fish pieces
- ravioli like dumplings, stuffed with cottage cheese minced meat or mushrooms, served with fried onions and no sauce
- crumbed and fried pork cutlet.
Some of the salads included:
- cold cooked cauliflower, with a dressing of cream, pineapple, walnuts and ginger
- pasta with salami and broccoli
- rice with chicken and corn
- finely chopped chinese cabbage with radish, cucumber, tomato and bean sprouts.
Drinks
Vodka is the National drink and comes in many varieties!
