Places to see and things to do
- Walk along the Esplanade, and spot some of the varied bird life that search the mud flats for their food.
- Take the younger ones to the huge kids playground located along the Esplanade.
- swim in the artificial lagoon
- take a diving and snorkeling cruise to the Great Barrier Reef. There are so many to choose from -good luck!
- go shopping at the night markets.
- visit the Botanic Gardens which showcase many of the exotic plants of the rainforest.
- take a walking heritage tour of town to se the old buildings, seeing examples of the colonial architecture. The highlights for us were the old court house and the central hotel. Along the way, visit the art gallery and museum.
- Do a day trip to Kuranda - taking the skyrail one way and the scenic railway the other. The Skyrail lifts you in a cable car above the rainforest for 7.5 km, while the historic railway winds its way through the rainforest. Both journeys have great views, including a stop to view the Barron Falls. The common route is to take the train up and return on the skyrail. They don't start from the same location in Cairns, so you can get a package that includes a bus transfer to take you from one to the other.
- If you want a busy day, head up to the Daintree and Cape Tribulation for a day trip.
