Kakadu
Northern Territory, Australia
Kakadu is about three hours drive southeast of Darwin. This world famous park has some great natural wonders for those willing to search around. You should consider the season when you go, as during the wet many places are inaccessible, while in the dry many fo the waterfalls are less impressive.
Places to see and things to do
- Your first stop should be the Bowali Visitor CEntre which will point you in the right direction and provide a background to the park.
- Hidden swimming holes: ask some locals for directions to their favorite swimming locations which may be off the beaten track.
- Waterfalls: Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls George, Gunlom. Gunlom is the only one where you do not need a 4WD, and even for Gunlom in the south of the park there is a long dirt road to take.
- Yellow Waters boat cruise: Depending whether you go in the wet or dry season, you will see plenty of crocs and bird life.
- Aboriginal rock art sites: Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock. Sunset at Ubir is a must do.
- Camping: the camping ground is well catered (showers, shops, bar, pool and restaurant!). Look out for the brumbies (wild horses) invading your camp site in the morning.
- Walks: there are many walks to chose from, including the Mangrovce Rainforest Walk at Ubirr where you may see a croc
