We have not visited Peru, though it is on our destination wish list, mainly as we want to visit Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is on our must do list as it is one of those special places that is a combination of amazing cultural, spiritual and environmental experiences all in one. Peru is a fascinating country of varying scenery (from the Amazon to the Andes) and there are many interesting sites to visit including the unmissable Machu Picchu.

About Machu Picchu

When we first planned our one year around the world trip, our first destination was Peru, however it turned at that at that time (February) the Inca Trial is closed, and that was the main reason for us going there. So we put it off for another trip, lets just hope we make it there one day.

When to Go

Most of the year is OK, but if you can avoid the rainy season January and February. I have heard from people who have visited Machu Picchu at this time that it tends to rain mid-afternoon and at night. If you are planning to hike, keep in mind that it could rain. Although the four day Inca Trail is closed in February, the Machu Picchu site is still open and you can get to other ways such as by train.

Getting there

There are two ways to get to the ruins at Machu Picchu. The easy way is by train from Cuzco, the other is by trekking from various distances away along the Inca Trail. If you have the time, hiking it is worth it. You should plan to arrive early (if you hike you normally arrive at sunrise to avoid the crowds and to get a better early morning experience.

What to do

Once you arrive at Machu Picchu, you can explore the various buildings, which are in very good condition. You should also make the effort to hike up Huanu Picchu, which is a steep mountain the overlooks Machu Picchu, where you can take a classic photo of the ruins.
