• Mt Everest is the world's tallest mountain at 8848 metres (see also top 10 list, 7 natural wonders)
• The first people to officially climb the mountain were Sir Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, in 1953
• In 2006, Geri Winkler, from Vienna Austria, became the first diabetic to climb Everest. He started his journey from 400 metres below sea-level at the Dead Sea.
• The youngest person the climb the mountain is Ming Kipa Sherpa who scaled the peak at 15 years and 9 months.
• Junko Tabei from Japan became the first woman to reach the top of Everest, achieving this feat in 1975.
• The first double amputee to climb Everest was Mark Inglis from New Zealand, in 2006
• The mountain is 60 million years old
• Water boils at 70 degree at the top
