Tips for getting the right hiking boots for you
When choosing hiking or walking boots you should consider the following:
- Fit and Comfort - this will depend on variations of the individual's foot size and shape. You should also consider how long you intend to hike for and also the load in your backpack
- Support - should be rigid enough to prevent the feet and ankles from twisting on uneven surfaces, while still being flexible enough to enable the natural walking motion to be made freely.
- Grip - look at the pattern, depth and wearability of the soles.
- Water Resistance / Breathability - moisture is a big factor in causing blisters, look for a waterproof upper and breathable material inner for keeping the feet dry.
- Quality - check the stitching and gluing for signs of a cheaply put together boot. During a trip the last thing you want is a blow out in your boots. Well known brand names does not necessarily mean a well made shoe, as their cheaper stock may be from different sources.
Types of Hiking Shoes:
- walking - suitable if you are doing lots of street walking.
- light-weight - low cut and not very bulky. Boot can take up lots of room in your pack. If they are too bulky you may resort to hanging them from your pack. Boots should be dry and clean and put inside a bag if placed in your pack.
- trail hiking - boots for these purposes require more support and stability, with a good grip for rough terrain and mountain trials.
