Rob enjoying a cheap Czech BeerIn our travels around the world we have sampled many beers. Eating the local food and drinking the local drinks (usually beer) is an essential travel experience.

The following are just examples of our beer experiences and you may have a totally different experience depending on your budget, where you travel and where you drink.

Germany

In Munich in September each year is the Oktoberfest. We headed into the Oktoberfest with our German friends we met in Belize many months ago. After a couple of one litre jugs of beer, and some schnapps, we soon got into the swing of things. We were in a mostly german tent, and it was great to see all the locals dressed in their traditional costumes, and dancing on the tables.

Australia

Redback Beer - Clare's favourite, this beer was first brewed at the Sail and Anchor Pub Brewery, in Fremantle, Western Australia. It is an adaptation of German-style wheat ale, best served with a slice of lemon. The Sail and Anchor was Australia's first craft brewery. See also the Guide to Australian Beer Drinking

Clare with an original BudCzech Republic

Cesky Budejovice, a town in the south of the Czech Republic, is the home of Buvar beer, the original and the best Budweiser beer. It very cheap too, costing us only 50c for a half litre.

Denmark

Carlsburg Beer - the label say made 'by appointment to the Royal Danish Court'. Now that there is an Aussie in Danish Royalty, they may start serving VB in their court.

Slovenia

Slovenian Beers that we tried: Union & Zlatorog

Mexico

Zacatecas, a town just north of Mexico City, is the home of Corona, so we had to have few while we were here. In Mexico Corona is cheap, costing about $1 a bottle most times.

Laos

In Vang Vieng, Laos, we went tubing, which entailed being taken a few kms up stream, jumping in the river with our tractor tyre inner tube. After only 50m, we were out again, to climb onto a riverside bar. After a Beer Lao each, and whirl on the flying fox, we were back in the water, this time for about 100m before being lured out by another bar, this one with a large swing. Some more tubing, more drinking, all up 6 hours of fun in the water and sun. Beer Lao is reputedly one of the best beers in the world, we particularly like the dark ale version.
