Some of these creatures are easy to spot in forests, rice fields, or even village streets, while others are rare or hidden. In this guide, we’ll explore the most fascinating animals in Bali and share how to meet them safely and responsibly during your visit.

1. Bali Myna (Jalak Bali)

This is one of the most famous native animals in Bali. The Bali myna is a critically endangered bird with white plumage and a crest over its head.

Jalak Bali lives only in limited parts of the island (and Nusa Penida) and is under protection. If you see one, observe quietly and from a distance, because they are fragile and shy.

2. Javan Ferret-Badger

A lesser-known wild animal in Bali, the Javan ferret-badger is a small, nocturnal mammal that plays an important role in the ecosystem. Endemic to Java and Bali, this animal prefers forested areas where it hides during the day and emerges at night to forage for insects, fruits, and small creatures.

The Javan ferret-badger, known as Biul Slentek, is active at night. Your chance to spot it is greater after dark, especially in quiet rural or jungle areas, but remember to observe with care. Please use a flashlight gently and always keep your distance.

3. Red-Necked Keelback (Snake)

This is one of the more serious poisonous animals in Bali. The red-necked keelback is venomous and often found near water or wetlands. If you hike near streams or rice fields, watch where you step or place your hands, especially near tall grass or rocks.

4. Malayan Krait

Another dangerous animal in Bali, this snake is mostly nocturnal and has a potent venom. It usually hunts at night, so be extra careful near forests or rural areas during dusk and midnight.

5. Dog-Toothed Cat Snake (Boiga cynodon)

The Boiga cynodon is a slender, usually nocturnal animal in Bali and can be found in gardens, secondary forests, and near streams. It is rear-fanged and may bite if provoked; again, admire from afar.

6. Monkeys (Long-tailed Macaque)

These are among the common animals in Bali especially in Ubud’s Monkey Forest. They are wild animals in Bali that can get bold, sometimes stealing food, glasses, or phones. Don’t feed them, don’t tease them, and keep your belongings secured.

7. Mosquitoes

While small, mosquitoes are among the most dangerous animals in Bali because they can transmit diseases like dengue or Zika. Use insect repellent and mosquito nets especially in the evenings or in rural areas.

8. Sharks & Sea Snakes

Offshore, you might encounter wild animals in Bali like reef sharks (e.g. blacktip reef shark) or sea snakes. The sharks are usually not aggressive unless provoked, but sea snakes are venomous.) If swimming or snorkeling, follow local safety advice, avoid murky waters, and wear protective gear.

9. Spiders, Scorpions, Centipedes

These common animals in Bali often hide around homes, in gardens, or under rocks. While most are harmless, some (like certain scorpions or centipedes) can sting or pinch. Always shake out shoes and clothing before wearing them outdoors in darker areas.

10. Banded Palm Civet

A more elusive animal live in Bali is the banded palm civet, which is nocturnal and lives in forest undergrowth. You might hear rustling at night or see their silhouette, but they’re shy and rarely seen in daylight.
