China is a fascinating country with a rich culture, amazing food, and incredible sights. But travelling there comes with a few unique challenges. Here are some practical tips to help you have a smoother and more enjoyable trip.

Shenzhen City Smog shrouding Shenzhen City

Top-10 Tips

  1. PLAN WHEN YOU GO: Avoid travelling during Golden Week (early October) and Chinese New Year as transport and attractions are overcrowded. If you are going to major cities, avoid winter time. Not only because it will be pretty cold, but as many people burn coal for heating there are often serious smog problems.
  2. DOWNLOAD A TRANSLATION APP: Google Translate works offline if you download Chinese beforehand. It’s a lifesaver for menus, signs, and conversations.
  3. MOBILE PAYMENTS RULE: In big cities, people use Alipay or WeChat Pay for almost everything. Foreign cards now work with them, but setting it up before you go can save hassle. Even cash is not always an option.
  4. TRAINS ARE GREAT: China’s high-speed rail is fast, clean, and punctual. Book early, as tickets can sell out, especially around holidays.
  5. CENSORSHIP REALITY: Many websites and apps are blocked (Google, Facebook, Instagram, etc.). Install a VPN before you arrive if you need them.
  6. AIRPORT PICKUP: If you can afford it, book an airport pickup through your hotel. After a long flight it is not fun trying to negotiate the hordes of touts at the airport, and then giving directions and finding your hotel is not always easy.
  7. TOILET PAPER ALERT: Always carry a small pack of tissues or toilet paper. Many public toilets don’t provide any.
  8. STREET FOOD SAFETY: Stick to stalls with lots of customers — it’s fresher and safer.
  9. CULTURE NOTE: When handing over money or a card, use two hands — it’s considered polite.
  10. CROSSING ROADS: Even at pedestrian crossings, traffic may not stop. Keep your eyes open and move steadily.
