Driver Wave
[ back to the Around Australia Guide ]
When driving in the outback of Australia, it is customary to acknowledge the driver of the oncoming vehicle with a wave. The important thing is to do it, though the technique is highly variable.
|
When to do it
On outback roads, you should wave to all drivers of oncoming vehicles. At other times, you may wish to limit your waves to only drivers of similar vehicles to yourself.
How to do it
The technique of the wave is highly variable. Here are a few examples, though don't be limited by these - feel free to come up with your own individual wave technique.
- single finger raised from the steering wheel
- the salute
- both hands vigorously
- hand out the window
Extreme Variations
We have come across one vehicle with a permanent waving hand, much like the bobbing head of a dog. While we enjoyed this variation of the driver wave, we felt like it was a cop out.
