This park takes up a large part of central Tasmania, and is part of the 1.38 million hectare Tasmanian World Heritage Area. Cradle Mountain is only a one hour drive from Devonport.

Why Go:

• see some spectacular Tasmanian wilderness scenery.

Highlights:

• Overland Track: one of great walking tracks, this multi-day walk is over 80 km and crosses from Dove Lake to Lake St Clair.
• Other walks: there are numerous short and long walks to be done in the park. One of the most popular is the Dove Lake Circuit walk, which has great views of Cradle Mountain reflecting in the lake for most of the way.

Eating & Drinking:

• bring along your picnic lunch if you are just doing a short day walk, or some serious dried foods and camping cooking facilities if you are doing a longer overnight walk.
• Make sure you bring lots of water, even though the weather is often wet and cold.
• Also take all rubbish out of the park with you when you leave.

Other things you should know about:

• Lake St Clair is the deepest lake in Australia
• Glaciers 200 metres thick once carved this landscape to create hidden lakes, moorlands, cliffs and tarns.
• The Tasmanian World Heritage Area is one of the few remaining areas of temperate forests in the southern hemisphere.
