These notes were made during a short trip to the Czech Republic. These are just our food experiences and you may have a totally different experience depending on your budget, where you travel and where you eat.

The national dish of the Czech RepublicNotes from September 2005

Czech food is very similar to the surrounding countries of Germany, Austria, Poland and Slovenia. Pork is a common meat eaten, and is part of their National dish. There are also many Turkish and Greek eateries.

National Dish
The national dish of the Czech Republic consists of roast pork, sliced served with a dough dumpling and purple and white saurkraut, with gravy. The dough dumpling is sold in most supermarkets in a roll, which when eaten is heated and sliced. With duck or goose, it is Pecena Kachna se Zelim.

Sausage stalls
Set up all over town including several down the main street, serving long ones, small ones and fat ones - usually eaten in a bread roll, or on a plate with mustard and a slice of brown bread. Very cheap burgers are sold at these places as well, comprised of mince meat patties or schnitzel meat.

Czech Beer - the best in the world?Cheese burgers
This is a common snack, with the use of different cheeses, like brie, blue, cheddar and edam, sometimes the cheese is crumbed and fried, othertimes the cheese is just the burger, for example a 250g round wedge of brie is put between the bread.
