Why Go:

  • Even though it is Tasmania's largest city, it has a quaint charm and a lot of things to do.

Highlights:

  • Salamanca Markets: A large outdoor market held every Saturday at Salamanca Place from 8.30am to 3 pm. Here you will find fine examples of woodwork usuing Tasmanian timbers, food stalls, books, flowers, wine, clothing, music and a lot of character.
  • Battery Point: Situated just behind Salamanca Place, this old suburb of Hobart has a village atmosphere with old Georgian Cottages and nice cafes. Historic highlights of this are is Arthurs Circus and Kelly's steps.
  • Cascade Brewery: Situated at the base of Mt Wellington, the Cascade Brewery Australia's oldest, and it produces some of Australia's most awarded beers. The brewery was started in 1824. There are tours available, which you must book in advance.
  • Cadbury Chocolate Factory Tour: Located in Claremont north of the city. There are daily tours and the chance to buy up big at the shop at the end of the tour. You must book in advance for the tours.
  • Mt Wellington: a 20 minute drive from the city centre, with great views of Hobart and surrounding area. Don't be surprised if the weather is a little cooler up there, as it can snow even in summer at the top.
  • Art Gallery and Museum: a modern gallery and museum with an excellent display about life in Antarctica and a colonial gallery with some rare colonial artworks.

Eating & Drinking:

  • The is a great range of eating options around town
  • Seafood is a specialty, especially at the restaurants at the waterfront precinct.
  • At the waterfront there are some popular floating take away fish and chip shops
