Queensland, Australia

Magnetic Island is a large island 8km off the coast of Townsville. The island is more than half National Park, with some nice beaches and accommodation. About 2000 people live on the island

Places to see and things to do

  • take a ferry across from Townsville, which takes about 20 minutes. There is also a car ferry so you can bring your own transport
  • stay on the island. There are accommodation options ranging from camping and backpackers to luxury resorts.
  • hire a push bike (or bring our own on the ferry) and take the challenge of riding the hills to the other end of the island.
  • If riding a bike is too challenging, hire a mini moke and zip around from beach to beach. There is also a bus service that will take you to most places on the island.
  • go swimming at a secluded beach
  • go hiking, and see some of the wildlife such as wallabies, koalas, possums and bird life.
