Charters Towers

Queensland, Australia

Charters Towers is a 90 minute drive south west of Townsville (130 kms) on the Flinders Highway (A6). At it's peak during the gold rush days, the town was so big and important that it was known to the locals as 'The World'.

Places to see and things to do

  • take a walk around town and see the many heritage buildings, including the old Stock Exchange and World Theatre. Most of the historic buildings are located in what they call 'One Square Mile'. Keep a look out for a few murals on the walls around town too.
  • drive up Towers Hill for a lookout over the town and surrounding countryside. If you go here early morning or a dusk you can see a lot of wildlife.
  • Enjoy lunch or just coffee at one of the many cafes.
  • have a picnic in one of the great parks situated around town.
  • go back in time with a visit to a restored miner's cottage and go panning for gold (guaranteed to find some).
  • You can buy or hire a slef-guided driving audio tour, availabale at the Visitor Centre.
