Tiwi Islands

Northern Territory, Australia

The Tiwi Islands comprises the two islands Melville and Bathurst, located about 80 km north of Darwin. The islands are Aboriginal lands, and you need a permit to visit, except for one day a year when the popular Tiwi Islands AFL grand final is played.

Places to see and things to do

  • Go on an organised tour to the islands, either by small plane or by a 2 hr ferry ride
  • purchase unique Aboriginal artworks direct from the artists.
  • go across in March to see the Tiwi Islands AFL grand final match.
  • try damper and billy tea straight from the fire
  • take a swim at Tomorapi Falls
  • go fishing
