Why Go:

The only reason the majority of people visit Dubbo is for the 'World Famous' Western Plains Zoo. If you are heading through this way, it is definitely worth a stop.

Highlights:

  • Dubbo Western Plains Zoo: You need a whole day to explore this open range zoo. You can drive your car around the 6km circuit of exhibits, but the best way to see it is to bring your own bike or hire one, and cycle from display to display. There are over 1000 animals, including rhinos, giraffes, elephants, big cats. Hidden moats and barriers make you feel like you with these animals in their natural habitat. If you don't see it all in one day, your ticket is valid for the next day too.

Lowlights:

  • Other than the zoo, there is not much to do in Dubbo.

Eating & Drinking:

  • There are a few pubs to drink at in town. Check them out first as some may be pretty rough.

Other things you should know about:

  • As Dubbo is on the main highway from Melbourne to Brisbane, it is a popular rest stop and consequently there are plenty of places to stay.
  • The drive from Sydney travels through the majestic Blue Mountains, a great place to stop for lunch and a short walk.
  • The driving distance Dubbo from Sydney is 414km (4.5 hrs), from Newcastle 400km (4.5 hrs), from Melbourne 856km (8 hrs), from Canberra 415km (4.5 hrs), from Adelaide 1212 km (13 hrs) and from Brisbane 895km (8.5 hrs).
