Woody Head, Bundjalung National Park: Backflipping Humpback

Statue of David, New ItalyAs we drove south down the Pacific highway, we stumbled upon a little town called New Italy. This town was founded by some Italian immigrants in about 1850, after an unsuccessful attempt to start a community in New France, which was actually New Ireland. They eventually came to New Holland and settled in New Italy. There are no Italians left, but a fascinating huge Italian museum which we spent ages looking through. We drove on to another small seaside village, Iluka, visiting the bluff and lookout, where we were entertained by a huge whale doing backflips along the coast.  From there we did a rainforest walk, enjoyable but not as impressive as the rainforests that we have seen further north – we have been so spoiled. Humpback WhaleWe had lunch at Woody Head in the Bundjalung National Park just a couple of kms away, and liked the place so much we decided to stay. Camping next to us was a little girl who could have been Olive’s twin. She was the same age with similar curly blonde hair. Olive spent the afternoon playing with her and her older sister.
