Camping Etiquette

[ back to the Around Australia Guide ]

If you are on a camping holiday in Australia, it is important to take heed of the following unwritten rules of camping

  • Greet your neighbours as soon as you arrive at the camp spot.
  • Be friendly but not very friendly. Do not enter the campsite of others unless you are invited.
  • Do not camp too close to the next camper.
  • Keep the noise down after 9 pm and before 7 am.
  • Pick up your rubbish as you leave.

Overnight Parking Etiquette

Here are some step you can take to make overnight parking a pleasant experience for all, and to make sure that councils keep them free too.

  • If required, obtain permission from the appropriate person.
  • keep your grey water to be disposed elsewhere if possible, and never dispose your black water.
  • be considerate with your noise levels, particularly after 9pm.
  • always leave the area as clean as when you arrived.
  • park out of the way and avoid blocking any access gates or driveways.
  • limit your stay to the time indicated.
  • purchase fuel, food and other supplies from the nearby town as a form of thank you.
  • never use toilet chemicals that are incompatible with septic systems.
  • only use awnings, chairs, washing lines and bbqs if appropriate.
  • do not use hydraulic jacks or levelling jacks on asphalt.
